The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.
Urbanization is rapidly increasing. UN estimates that more than half of the world’s population lives in towns and cities and predicts that the percentage will rise to 75% by 2050. This trend continues to put pressures on urban development, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa which is experiencing fast growing slum population too. In fact, UN projects that over 200 million people in the region will live in slums by 2020. As urbanization and urban population keeps on expanding, the need to address housing issues is increasingly urgent. East-Africa is the region least urbanized and urbanizing fastest, which provides the unique opportunity to sustainably plan urban development, including the housing sector.
The Urban Energy Unit of UN-Habitat takes this opening to design smart new housing solutions. With the built environment directly impacting 9 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, innovation in building systems and infrastructure can dramatically influence the success of the 2030 Agenda and the Habitat III New Urban Agenda. UN-Habitat in partnership with UNEP and Yale CEA designed, built the first Ecological Living Module (ELM) and displayed it in New York. The ELM served as a model to demonstrate new solutions to universal technical challenges including 1. Resilient construction techniques using renewable materials and resources, 2. Secure on-site solar energy, 3. Safe sustainable water capture and purification, 4. Indoor air quality remediation, and 5. Waste management in support of distributed micro farming.
UN-Habitat is currently working to design and build in Kenya a new ELM that will specifically respond to the tropical local climatic and cultural contexts. This project also aims to support Kenya’s government to respond to the pressing housing need (delivering 500.000 houses in the next 5 years) as well as East-African region governments facing similar challenges.
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Urban Energy Unit the intern will:
– Assist the team in designing and building the Ecological Living Module for tropical climate.
– Organize projects information material, documents and deliverables.
– Assist in preparing draft technical notes for review by the team.
– Assist the team in any other duty related to the ELM project.

Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Preferred Areas of Studies:
Post graduate level student (Master’s Programme) or Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
